Chapter Ten

“For the love of Pete, Reeve. Can you at least put down your cell phone for a few minutes and look at the menu?”

Reeve dragged his attention from the screen on his phone to his sister sitting across the table from him. “Was just reading a blog.”

Behind Gigi, the terrace that stretched nearly to the water’s edge was already crowded. The wall of windows had been opened, allowing the evening breeze to drift through the Chef’s Table dining room, stirring Gigi’s long blond hair.

Or maybe that was caused by Harrison sitting beside her with his arm resting over the back of her chair.

It struck Reeve as protective.

Not a bad thing, in his estimation.

“What blog?” Gigi asked suspiciously.

Reeve slid his phone into his jacket pocket. “The Chatelaine Report.” He’d been more than entertained by Isabel’s humorous recounting of her sojourn at the castle. She’d relayed much of the same information that Smitty had droned on so endlessly about, but devoid of the yawn factor.

She’d also deferred discussing the reason she’d been hanging at the castle in the first place.

Which only made him wonder why. She’d had plenty of time to address the reasons why she had escaped the church without a new groom. Reeve had taken her home from the castle on Monday. Now it was Friday. He hadn’t talked to her. Hadn’t seen her, even though he’d spent the last day and a half at the Stellar building taking care of FortuneMedia business before heading back to the mining office that afternoon.

The official statement issued from the groom’s quarter the day after the non-wedding had cryptically stated that the ceremony had been postponed due to a family emergency and followed it up with the standard request to please respect their need for privacy “at this difficult time.”

No mention at all that the supposed emergency had been prompted by the groom getting caught on camera with a naked woman in his arms.

The social media post from Trey’s bachelor party had since disappeared as if it had never been—suggesting that the Fitzgeralds’ influence ran even deeper and wider than Reeve had thought. Like most things, though, what the Fitzgeralds had said officially differed wildly from the commentary. Stories behind the bride’s flight from the church had ranged from anxiety attacks to a bout of appendicitis to hush-hush addictions on the bride’s part that the beleaguered groom could no longer tolerate.

“Making sure the blog isn’t flouting the cease and desist?” Gigi asked him.

Reeve sighed faintly. “You know that I only threatened to file suit. I never actually did it.”

Gigi rested her elbow delicately on the table and propped her pointed chin on her palm. “And why is that?”

He knew by her smug smile that she already thought she knew. She just wanted to hear him say it.

Fair enough. In the last several weeks, he’d learned a lot about his sister and what had motivated her—namely feeling cut out of the family business she claimed she’d wanted to run. He was willing to cut her some slack because of that, as well as his oblivious participation in the whole thing.
